About this product

Product Information

Plok is an agreeable, though surprisingly challenging game that will appeal, at least to some degree, to fans of Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. Armed with killer jumping abilities, the title character's preferred method of attack is to throw his arms and legs at the monsters, fleas, and other enemies. In addition to killing baddies, he must perform such tasks as trip switches, fly a spaceship, find eggs, and avoid spikes, logs, and other obstacles. There's much to like about this quirkily charming, cartoon-like game, including a special black-and-white level in which players control Plok's grandfather.

  • Good but lacking

For under 20 dollars, Plok is a great game. However compared to similar platformers on the SNES, it is lacking a few key features such as a method of saving one's progress. The games difficulty makes it hard to enjoy at first, and when you want to take a break and comeback, you cannot resume from where you left off thanks to the lack of a save battery in the cart. The game looks and plays great despite the saving issues, and deaths never feel cheap or unfair. For the value, Plok is a tough game to turn down, and I'd recommend it to anyone who has already played out Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country.

  • Don’t judge a game by its label

At first glance, Plok looks like any other budget platformer of its era. With large sprites, seemingly generic enemies and a character that most people haven’t heard of, it’s easy to pass this game by. However, I’d encourage any Mario or Donkey Kong fan to give Plok a chance, especially if you’ve played those other games to death. Plok’s main attack is throwing his arms, then his legs. He also has a spin jump that lets him jump higher. In each level there’s a gift box to find that will transform him and give him a temporary special ability, such as a flamethrower or shotgun (yes, seriously!). The jumping in this game feels satisfying and fair. Plok doesn’t feel too floaty or too heavy. Sometimes the platforms are spaced just a little too high or low and you feel like you’re making a leap of faith. This is a flaw in the game, but once you play through the level once or twice you’ll get a feel for where you’re going. Speaking of playing through levels a few times, you definitely will because Plok can be somewhat difficult at times. Not in an unfair way, but there is a noticeable difficulty. The graphics are bright and colorful, aesthetically pleasing enough. The enemies aren’t anything to write home about, you have jumping fish bones and frogs, but Plok is more about the play forming aspect so it doesn’t distract too much from the gameplay. One thing you’ll definitely notice is the music. The music in Plok is fantastic and it’ll quickly be stuck in your head. Overall, Plok is great for retro gamers that are looking for something off the beaten path. It’s not perfect, but considering you can pick it up for less than $20, it’s definitely worth adding to a collection that already has the staple titles.
